China launches unmanned cargo ship development alliance

China Classification Society (CCS) and HNA Technology Logistics Group have launched an unmanned cargo ship development alliance in China, aiming to lead future shipping development. As explained, the alliance intends to become a pioneer in the adaptation of shipping and shipbuilding industry to the rapid change of market and technology. The collaboration aims to establish technology and regulatory standards, assess of the environmental impacts, verification and inspection services for the industry and the eventual commercialization of unmanned vessels.The alliance is supported by other industry experts as well, including ABS, DNV GL, Chinese ship and Marine Engineering Design Institute, Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute etc. More scientific and technical research institutions, industry and end-users are expected to join the collaboration as well.Plans include delivery of the first unmanned cargo ship in 2021.
