Japanese ballast water management system manufacturer Miura Co has completed an environmental test that it says represents a landmark on its way to US Coast Guard (USCG) type approval. The HK system uses a UV reactor and multilayer filter to sterilize organisms. The companyreported that, having completed the environmental test, it is beginning the implementation phase of a land-based test at the Maritime Environmental Resource Center (MERC), an accredited independent inspection body in the US. It will also conduct onboard tests in East Asia. Miura, which claims to have received orders for installations on more than 500 ships, said that the latest progress meant that its journey towards US approval was 75% complete. It is aiming for type approval by March 2018. The company obtained IMO type approval in March 2014, and alternate management system (AMS) approval from the USCG in November 2014.
